Vomiting + T1D

Diabetes is Boo-Sheet... (3).png

things you must know about vomiting for type 1 diabetics

  • Every person with T1D who has nausea or vomiting MUST be assumed to have DKA until proven otherwise (aka do a ketones test)

  • Vomiting requires URGENT assessment by checking both blood glucose and blood ketones

  • RAPID deterioration can occur in DKA and may be life-threatening. We recommend calling 000 or getting to the ER immediately if ketones are over 1.5mmol/L

  • NEVER ASSUME that vomiting has been just caused by food poisoning , “gastro” , alcohol or any other cause until it is clear that insulin has been effectively administered and blood glucose and ketones are not elevated

  • If vomiting is caused by alcohol (see here for tips on t1d + alcohol) and nil Ketones present, still check on both blood glucose and ketones through the night and the next 24hrs as alcohol effects levels for 24hrs after drinking.

  • If vomiting is caused by gastro or food poisoning etc refer to your sick day management plan and contact your Dr. Even though you may not be consuming food you still need insulin (as your liver will still be releasing glucose) to avoid DKA, at the same time as making sure you don’t go low either. You will need to check blood sugar levels and ketones quite often whilst you are sick.

  • Stay hydrated and well rested and if an adult make sure you let someone know you are unwell so they can check on you.
