What is Type 1 Diabetes “Honeymoon Period” ?

THE HONEYMOON PERIOD (OR THE HONEYMOON PHASE")

The Honeymoon Phase (or Honeymoon Period) amongst people with type 1 diabetes refers to the period of time shortly following diabetes diagnosis when the pancreas is still able to produce a significant enough amount of insulin to reduce insulin needs and aid blood glucose control.

This does not, unfortunately, indicate that the diabetes is in remission or can be cured. - Source Diabetes.co UK

It is true that when a person is first diagnosed they’ll often go into a ‘honeymoon’ phase. Everyone’s honeymoon phase is different in duration. This is because it depends on how much endogenous insulin those beta cells in the pancreas may still produce shortly after diagnosis. We don’t know why some people still secrete some endogenous insulin shortly after diagnosis and some don’t. What we do know though is that lifestyle changes like dietary changes won’t prolong the honeymoon phase.
