Type1 Superstar ✨Finn✨
My son Finn Clarkson was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on the 9th July 2024.
We noticed weird symptoms like weight loss but put it to his so active, drinking lots of water and toilet but they go hand in hand. Big red flag was bed wetting all of a sudden then random vomits.
The morning of discovery he vomited and said he didn't feel well. That day we had a lunch date with a friend who was a nurse and was playing to bring a urine cup and stick to check his urine incade he needed antibiotics. His glucose and protein were very dark and she said that's diabetes.
We raced home, finger pricked him while we were could get no blood from his finger. Finally after 20 mins on the phone to health direct managed to prick his finger to a reading of 31.3. To our shock lady on phone told us she's calling a ambulance but we drove ourselves as he was fine running around playing.
At hospital his blood sugar was 32.8 with a ketone of 8.9. He was admitted for 4 days. The following day we were scheduled to fly to QLD so my family could meet our new 7 week old baby. The drs at the hospital told me if I hadn't of admitted him that day he would of fell into a DKA within 24 hours. I was praised picking up on the signs.
I still feel our first DKA is going to come soon and is scary to think about but Finn is an absolute champion at managing with Type 1 Diabetes. He is now 6 and can finger prick himself when asked, can take his pump on and off himself while going for showers. Before we got the pump he was starting to want to do his manual injections.
We have battles with highs and lows alot as his such a active boy and sometimes forgets he can't just go eat something without telling us but we try to make his life as normal as possible.
